Funny things can happen in a rare Sunday early afternoon high school hoops contest, especially on Super Bowl Sunday, with the hype of the big game and related festivities looming.

But the North Andover boys handled the unusual time and unofficial holiday just fine.

Led by yet another stellar performance by superstar Zach Wolinski, the Scarlet Knights shook off a slow start and beat Lexington 70-54 on Sunday.

ֱIt was a very good performance in our last home game of the regular season,ֱ said North Andover (13-4) head coach Paul Tanglis. ֱIt was early. Itֱs always tough on Sundays. You never know what the atmosphere will be like. But we had a good crowd, and the atmosphere was great. and the kids responded.

ֱLexington came out and took the first quarter. We were down by one heading into the second quarter. But the defensive intensity really picked up after that. We had a 34-24 lead at halftime, and it went up to 16 after that and we controlled it from there.ֱ

Wolinski once again led the way, scoring a team-high 19 points and adding seven assists.

ֱIt all started off with Zach,ֱ said Tanglis. ֱHe really controlled the game from the point guard position. He made the right reads and found the open guys. Then players like (Zach) DesRochers and (Cam) Bethel hit their shots.ֱ

DesRochers scored 12 points, while Bethel and Niko Catalano each added 11 points. They all also starred on defense.

ֱItֱs good to get a quality win against a tough team thatֱs going to the tournament,ֱ said Tanglis. ֱWe have a tough one on the road Thursday at Natick, which is a very good team. We are trying to be playing as well as we can going into the tournament, and taking on good teams is what we want to do.ֱ
